James Caan welcomes paternity leave plans

Monday, March 08, 2010

Paternity leave proposals welcomed by James Caan James Caan has argued that the government's paternity leave proposals will benefit the UK in more ways than it hinders it.

While he accepted that giving fathers the option to take more time off work could hit some businesses, particularly smaller firms, the Dragon's Den star pointed out that this is no different than women taking time off when pregnant.

In a column for the Telegraph, he queried: "Surely a small business would suffer the same way if a female director went on maternity leave?"

Consequently, Caan said that the Labour Party's plans to allow dads to take more paternity leave by sharing some of their partner's maternity allocation could benefit many families.

He added the government has recognised that fathers want the option of spending more time with their child, describing this is as "a sign that the labour market is becoming more flexible".

A study carried out by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills discovered that the vast majority of fathers think paid paternity leave is important.

It revealed that 91 per cent of men with children aged under five consider the matter to be a priority.ADNFCR-2921-ID-19655006-ADNFCR
