Strong leadership skills "important for success in business" Posted by Editorial team

The recruitment of people with strong leadership skills is important for the success of a business, according to new research.

A study by the Chartered Management Institute and Penna has shown 80 per cent of respondents in successful organisations believe their superiors are effective.

This comes to only 39 per cent of management personnel in firms that are not doing as well.

Meanwhile, 43 per cent of the 4,500 people answering the survey said they thought the individuals in charge of them were ineffective.

The CMI said good leadership skills can lead to gains of up to 23 per cent in the overall performance of a business and a 32 per cent rise in the productiveness of its employees.

It was also discovered adequate training may be the key to turning around a flagging company, with the most successful businesses investing 36 per cent more on average on developing managers per year than less impressive firms.

Elsewhere, the comments of head of HR practice development at the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development Vanessa Robinson echoed these findings.

"Developing the right leadership at the top is the best way to ensure the right environment for sustainable organisation success," she stated.
