Perks and praise 'boost employee performance'

Monday, February 08, 2010

Perks and praise 'boost employee performance' Line managers and HR professionals have been advised that staff retention rates could be improved if staff are offered praise and employee perks.

According to the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), many employees prefer to work in a place where they have a good rapport with their boss.

Therefore, the organisation has encouraged managers to build a positive relationship with their workforce in order to keep them in their jobs.

The CIPD also advised bosses to make the effort to retain employee perks such as tea and coffee, even in the current economic climate.

Charles Cotton, performance and reward adviser at the group, said: "If organisations do start cutting back on their tea and coffee, it does send a message that perhaps the organisation may be in deeper problems than they originally anticipated."

According to a recent study by uSwitch.com, only 57 per cent of employees in the UK are able to enjoy a free cup of tea or coffee at work.

One in four respondents said their company has cut back on refreshments over the last year, while more than two-fifths said the staff perks they are given are poor.
